Freshman year

The Freshmen year is pretty much over, and it was very exciting and fun year. Since the school program is totally different from my old school,  it took little bit of time to get use to it, but it was like an adventure to get know about. The first thing I surprised was about the bathrooms were unisex. It was strange and weird, so I used girl’s bathroom everyday which is at the bottom of the school next to the dance studio. Since it took a long time to go all the way down and it was tiring to climb all stairs and cross the long hallways, I eventually  just tried to get used to it and it wasn’t that strange. The other remarkable events during school life were “Drop everything and read” and Community Service. These events happened  once every quint and it was more fun than I expected. “Drop everything and read” was a great event for students like me who don’t read much, it helped to read for a whole period. The other thing I was surprised about this was that every single student followed and respected this rule and I felt moved by it. It might not happen in Korea. Also, every quint, we go to Community Service to food banks, homeless shelters and farm, to volunteer for them. I did not want to do it, because I thought it would be hard and tiring. My first Community Service was at a farm and I was worried about it, but it was really fun and amusing. It made me to feel like a nice child.
In Humanities I learned a lot about how to listen to other people and respect them during debate. We usually discussed about a topic and after we chose side to argue. I really like this style of class, because we can share our thoughts as a classmate and it might help to grow our imagination and organizational power. Also, I absolutely  like art classes and their programs, how they give us opportunities to try different arts. I took Graphic design for 9th grade. It was a great experience to try to make a poster for school, design our own business card and also try to use different graphic programs. Next year, I might take choir and performance dance, so that I can fill up my art requirements and try what I want in 11th and 12th grade. I’m very excited to be 10th grade to experience all different classes with my classmates.

The other thing I like was my science class. My teacher was Emma Wolf-Saxon. She is very nice. She never is angry even though we were not focusing very well. I specially liked this class because there were many experiments. I usually like science and thought it is cool and amazing, but I liked it more with an action. This year, we built and made our own experiments with our teammates, so that we can frame teamwork and observe the result all together. For example, we had a huge project to make a catapult for Winterfest. We planned out our design, calculated the distance and built our own. During discussion time, we talked about our catapult and fixed it to a better way. Also we needed to observe a spot for a whole year and examine how it change. We drew a rough picture and labeled every single thing on their own spot. By doing this, I could see the weather of that day and seasons. In spring, I could see lot of flowers grown up. I hope my science class in future will be like this.

Since I came to this school, I can feel that how much I changed. I laugh much more than before and the most important part is that I’m enjoying to come to this school. I like to meet new people here and try many different people  in this community. That is one of the many exciting reasons why I cannot wait until next year.
